Choosing an English Equestrian Bridle: Snaffle Bridles vs. Double bridles or Dressage Bridles
Equestrian Bridles are composed of three basic parts: the headstall, noseband, bit and the reins. Do your research, decide upon your riding style, determine a budget and go from there.
Snaffle Bridles:
Snaffle bridles are the most common English bridle; therefore, the most adaptable. They fit a wide variety of bits and nosebands. One of the great benefits of snaffle bridles is that they can be used with or without a noseband.
Double Bridles:
The double bridle is also called a full bridle or a Weymouth and provides the rider with more control than other bridles. Double bridles are typically used for dressage riding. The double bridle contains two bits, the main bit and a bradoon bit.
To ensure you’re choosing the right bridle, follow these simple steps:
- Determine your needs: what kind of riding will you be doing? Do you need a bridle for riding and for showing? Will you require a practice bridle?
- What is your riding style? Remember, bridles coincide with your riding style.
